Insurance Rates Rising Due to More Motorcyles on the Road...

This is from an article in Suds & Butterfly newsletter.

Just read a report in the Daily Texan news publication. It is suggesting that with all the new inexperienced riders switching from cages to scooters, mopeds and motorcycles that the insurance rates could rise because, the average claim payment for lighter vehicles was $5,554 - 14.3 percent higher than the average claim for heavier vehicles.

If I am reading this correctly, they are going to penalize people for their choice of transprotation because they are shelling out more money for more extensive injuries. Truth be told, the majority of these injuries are probably due to failure to yeild crashes where the rider probably would have been just fine except for someone elses choice. If they are going to have to recover funds spent, then they should raise the rates of the people who chose to cause these injuries and not penalize people who choose to ride. It would seem that if we're not going to pay at the pump, then we're going to pay the almighty insurance companies the difference of what we're saving at the pump. I do agree that all new riders should not just jump on a high powered bike and expect to drive it like they drove their car. If they do, then they are in for a rude awakening and will finally get what we who ride as a way of life have been bitchin about for so many years. There is a way to live in harmony with cage drivers, but it will take 100% participation on both parts. If anyone knows someone who is thinking about getting a bike and hasn't been on one before or for several years, then please take the time to teach them or at least encourage them to take a rider safety course. At the same time, I think we who ride had better get ready to do battle with the insurance companies that are bent on dictating how we live.
