"They are of the People, and return again to mix with the People, having no more durable preeminence than the different Grains of Sand in an Hourglass. Such an Assembly cannot easily become dangerous to Liberty. They are the Servants of the People, sent together to do the People's Business, and promote the public Welfare; their Powers must be sufficient, or their Duties cannot be performed. They have no profitable Appointments, but a mere Payment of daily Wages, such as are scarcely equivalent to their Expences; so that, having no Chance for great Places, and enormous Salaries or Pensions, as in some Countries, there is no triguing or bribing for Elections."
-- Benjamin Franklin (letter to George Whatley, 23 May 1785)
The day prior to my leaving for Oregon I attended a Motorcycle Safety andAwareness meeting as one of the speakers. About 30 people took part includingDPS Traffic Enforcement Division, NHTSA, SMSA, DPS Motorcycle TrainingDirector, Tx. Dept. of Transportation and several other persons. It wasactually very well orchestrated and could prove to be beneficial to TexasRiders. I will get more out next week when time permits. We will be holding more meetings in the near future.SMSA will be hosting a national Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Seminar inAustin, Texas on the weekend of August 19. I am hopeful that we will haveRebecca, the head of B.A.N.D., to attend that meeting as I will be inVirginia.
We flew out to Oregon to speak to the Oregon ABATE concerning the DelegateProcess and offer tips on running for office and winning with minimalamounts of money. Gunney picked us up at the airport and played host allweekend. It was cold and windy making for a real change from here.Gunney fired up some good ole Irish Stew and we washed it down with Irishcoffee. Those riders out there have some really pretty scenery to ridethrough but hardly anyone was doing that this weekend. The Presidentopened the meeting and then we had the first 1 ½ hours to fill withhistory of Dream Town and the delegate process. Then we offered the tipsfor winning a political office. The riders were very enthusiastic and gaveus a long lasting standing ovation. We sat in on a workshop on Leadershipand spent some fine time discussing all issues concerning biker rights. One member asked the President "We did just give him a one way ticketdidn't we?" That brought loud responses from others. The trip was very enjoyable though tiring. Thanks to ABATE of Oregon forbeing so warm and friendly. A very Special thanks to Gunney for being sucha superb host. He is a fantastic cook as well. Didn't get to see Sam whilewe were there. Guess it was just too cold for old people.NHTSA is pushing for helmet laws again but I have faith in our Warriorsthat it won't happen in Texas.
Thanks go out to Elmer McKeegan, our computer genius, for fixing us a CDthat could be formatted into our TV Show. We started off with the one fromEngland asking how close does a motorcycle have to be for you to see it?Thanks Elmer for sending those PSA's down to us.Thanks also to the Amarillo Boozefighters M/C for coming on board as TMRA2 Warriors.
Have to run back home to have a physical for my new doctor and will comeback to the office directly from the hospital. Have a meeting in Austin onSaturday and will be at the DFW Fish Fry on Sunday. Hope to see some ofyou there.
DON'T FORGET TEXAS INDEPENDENCE DAY FREEDOM RALLY the next weekend.
