800 line

Just got off the phone with Joey Lester and we should have our 800 line in a few days. This should help with passing campaign information to more riders. We could use someone who is in a position to answer calls so we can forward the line and have immediate answering. If no one can handle the task we will have to get unlimited minutes on our cell phone and forward calls to it.If you feel you can and are willing to handle this little chore please contact the office. Thanks,

Chairman's Update

Tonight at 9:00 PM Central time on ABC a new show (In The Jury Room) will be broadcasting an episode that has a jury considering a case involving a motorcyclist and a car driver. From the previews it looks like the motorcyclist died and the driver of the other vehicle is on trial. Thought you might like to check it out.
Think you've seen it all in campaigning for the November election? An obituary just ran in my neck of the woods for William Thomasset. The person who wrote the obituary stated "in lieu of flowers William would be honored and gratified by your vote for the Bush/Cheney ticket in November,"
We sat and listened to Transportation officials from several states explain why Toll Roads were the only way to build roads today. Florida officials say in their state it is Toll Roads or No Roads. I asked him if they had ever paid off a Toll Road and he said "we're trying." Seems administration costs are quite high making it virtually impossible to ever get one paid for. Our highways are built for obsolescence to allow jobs to last forever. The Departments of Transportation are the most wasteful government agencies in the country.
Next month starts the serious campaign work. Don't sit around and let them do it. Choose a candidate, get out in the field and get to work. You never know what you can do until you try.

Chairman's Update

Greg, Nobody and I set up at the Longriders Run in New Summerfield inhopes of getting some support built in the eastern one third of the state. We encountered some of the most miserable weather this weekend than ispractical for travel and attendance was down drastically from previous years.
As your chairman, I spoke to the group from the bandstand and explained what we do for Texas riders. Of course there were plenty of cheers until I explained that what we do is virtually without any help from them. We managed to pick up a hand full of memberships and renewals saturday but based on the number of riders in east Texas we are still without help in that area.
Warrior and State Rep. Chuck Hopson came out on Friday to visit with the riders and seek their support in his upcoming election. Those he met couldn't believe an ordinary rider who owns a pharmacy could be a State Rep.
Countless numbers of those present came up to shake your chairman's hand and let us know how much they appreciate what we are doing. My reply was short and to the point. "No you don't. You can't possibly appreciate what we do when you have absolutely no idea what it is we do. What you appreciate is that you don't have to wear a helmet to ride and your bike insurance is still reasonable. You appreciate that the Road Block Bill did not pass and that you can carry a concealed weapon. Mostly you appreciate not having to put forth any effort or money to make these things happen. If you truly appreciate what we do you would join the association and get involved by putting forth your share of the time, effort and money it requires to be effective." They could very quickly find a reason to be elsewhere when asked to join and help out.
Attended the COC meeting in Whitehorse on sunday and Karl Ford made it to that meeting.. We laid it on the line by giving them a list of candidates running in the east texas districts and what we knew of their records or their stated positions. In the House district 05 race between Mark Breding andBryan Hughes, we received a call from Chairman Soechting just prior to the meeting, that Mark Breding has withdrawn from the race. We are told Bob Glaze will file for the Democrat candidate position this week.We discussed the Assault Weapons Ban and the Patriot Act Reauthorization coming up for votes in congress and asked for their calls to US Senators and Congess to not renew either. We also discussed the quiet way the administration is working to give the CIA the authority to become a law enforcement agency for domestic crime as part of the intelligence (if there issuch a thing in DC) reorganization. It was all but done when word leaked out and now they say nothing has been voted in or out as of right now. While this may be true we know it would already be official if it hadn't come to light. In their minds you can bet it already is a done deal.
There was one hell of a battle over formation of the FBI. The only way it finally passed was that they would not carry weapons and would not be involved in law enforcement. They would be used for investigation ONLY and any information gathered would be turned over to local authorities for enforcement. We all can see how that turned out. The government has just announced that 50,000 M16s will be passed out to the country's Game Wardens. The reason given for this show of firepower according to officials is the game wardens are outgunned by the AK47s in the hands of those they must face on a daily basis. I would be very interested in just how many more federal and state employees are going to become armed agents while cutting back on individuals rights to protect themselves..
Our military has seized tons of AK47s and ammo and destroyed them. We then purchased $50,000,000 in weapons to arm the Iraqui authorities. This despite the AK47 was cheaper and far superior to what we have to offer. We did not sign one member at the COC meeting. We did receive words ofsupport to come but we hear that all the time. We'll wait and see if any true support comes from this group. We did however have a Life member fromthe Cherokee Wind Warriors M/C turn in his patches. He says he can'tsupport the association because he believes the Patriot Act is necessary for our safety. He feels we should forget that the states are supposed to run the federal government and the feds should be able to pass laws to protect us with no consideration for the rights of the states. He did not even bother to give his name and I didn't ask. If he is as opposed to our actions as he expressed he will contact the editor to stop his Warrior after the next one comes out.
We are having major computer probs at the office. We have put it in the shop twice in two weeks, paid over $200 and it is still not much for service. We can not access Word to file data or retrieve files from Documents nowbecause it says Microsoft Office 2000 Premium is missing among other programs. Hopefully someone who comes to the Advisor meeting this saturday can furnish some answers to the problems. It runs at about the speed of a 233 CPU. At times even though I type with only one finger it is necessary to pause between letters to give it time to print each.We will attend the Transportation Committee hearing in the morning to possibly discuss Safety and Awareness Billboards.

SPEEDY GUV AGAIN

Perry zooming down road?
Constable's log indicates a speeding biker who got away was the governor.

Web Posted: 08/18/2004 12:00 AM CDTW.
Gardner SelbyExpress-News Austin Bureau

AUSTIN - Gov. Rick Perry nearly got ticketed for speeding on a motorcycle last month, a law officer said, though Perry said Tuesday he couldn't recall any close call of that sort during a weekend ride on a scenic byway.
Bill Schlueter, a Travis County deputy constable, said he was driving easton Southwest Parkway around 3:45 p.m. on July 3 when he saw a solo motorcyclist wearing a helmet "cruising" west at 75 to 80 mph in a 55-mphspeed zone.
The hilly road, with three lanes in each direction, juts from Austin morethan eight miles southwest of the Governor's Mansion, ending at Texas 71 between Austin and Llano. The parkway, past limestone bluffs and close toBarton Creek, frequently draws hobby bicyclists and motorcyclists.
Schlueter said the motorcycle was out of sight after he turned around, but he pulled over a black SUV trailing about a quarter mile behind. The driver identified himself as a Department of Public Safety trooper with Perry.
"I didn't get a good clock on the governor, but he was over the speed limit," Schlueter said. "I did get a good clock on the trooper behind him."
Perry's office said the DPS trooper was in the second of two vehicles trailing Perry and was not told that he was speeding. The trooper could not be reached Tuesday.
Schlueter said the trooper did not get a ticket because he was on duty providing security.
"I just let it go," Schlueter said.
Schlueter, the Republican nominee for Hays County constable, Precinct 4, said Perry didn't get a ticket because he was "gone" from view.
"If I'd have stopped him, he'd have gotten a ticket because he's not a law enforcement officer in the line of duty," Schlueter said.
A Travis County citation for going 75 mph in a 55-mph zone would yield a$120 fine plus $87 in court costs.
Schlueter said he had not replayed the stop - even to colleagues - until a reporter inquired.
"I'd have never thought in a million years it was the governor."
Precinct 3 Constable Drew McAngus, Schlueter's boss, was unaware of the stop, an aide said.
McAngus' chief deputy, Stacy Suits, said Schlueter could not have chased Perry down after stopping the trooper.
"You can't catch everybody driving down a freeway," Suits said. "There're
tons of reckless drivers in this town."
Perry, visiting San Antonio on Tuesday, indicated through an aide that he had no recollection of the trooper getting stopped and was unavailable for questions on motorcycling.
His spokeswoman, Kathy Walt, said later that Perry acquired a motorcycle in 2002. He rides a Harley-Davidson, she said.
Walt said that on July 3 the governor passed a speed trap on the parkway without being pulled over.
"You're talking about a traffic stop that never occurred for a speeding violation that never occurred," Walt said. "He wasn't speeding. You're being grossly unfair with this approach."
The July stop happened four years after Perry was a passenger in a car stopped on U.S. 290 near Dripping Springs. The driver, a Perry aide, was given a warning for allegedly driving 75 mph in a 55-mph zone.
According to a DPS video of the June 2000 stop, Perry told the officer writing the warning: "Why don't you just let us get down the road?"
An activity log for July 3 filed by Schlueter states that en route to Shady Hollow, a community he patrols, he "observed motorcycle on S.W. Pkwy" going" 75/80 mph. Could not turn on him. Heavy traffic. Did traffic stop on blackvehicle following motorcycle. Turned out to be a DPS trooper with the governor's" security detail. "Motorcycle rider was governor."
The account concludes: "No ticket issued."

State Chair's update

During the past three and a half months your chairman has virtually lived out of a vehicle. My clean clothes are in the suitcase or laying in the back seat and my dirty clothes in the trunk. I have visited chapters, candidates, and COCs. Attended political functions, worked door to door voter registration drives and still have a ways to go.
These past two weeks have made me realize I will never get to all the candidates in time for the September beginning of the real race for political office. The heat and humidity caused some problems with breathing and I am back on heavy doses of Steroids and Antibiotics. Along with that the Congressional Race in my new District 22 must be my priority beginning in September. To that end I will purchase a new top line computer and get DSL or RoadRunner put into my house (at my expense) to do my best to stay on top of things until the election ends in November. To contact me call my cell phone 512-971-6777. If I am unable to answer the call just hang up and I will call back on the same day. I have upgraded my service to allow free nights and weekends plus more minutes.

I believe you will agree that our legislative goals remain the same. If you don't agree let your District Advisor know of any changes you believe should be made in time for the Advisor meeting on August 28th.
We plan to introduce our Insurance Bill, Failure To Yield Bill and a Joint Resolution to change the Constitution to require all Committee meeting votes on Bills and Amendments, and all Floor votes on Bills and Amendments (except Local and Consent Bills) be recorded votes. Votes will be made available on internet for a minimum of 90 days. Start now and contact your senator and Representative and find if they would consider support for these issues. Especially all of you if Chairman Smithee is your Rep, contact him about bringing up the Insurance Bill next session.
To find out who represents you now click on the following site, type in the information called for and then contact them on these issues. (you may have to cut and paste depending on how it comes through on your email address). Or go to the TMRA2.org website, click on legislative and click on who represents me.

We are working on recommendations for the upcoming state elections and will discuss them at the Advisor meeting. They will be posted as soon as possible after the meeting. Of course it goes without saying we must support our Warriors.

Representative Districts: These are our members who have contested races.

11 - Chuck Hopson - Jacksonville, Texas
18 - Dan Ellis - Livingston, Texas
45 - Patrick Rose - San Marcos, Texas
56 - John Mabry - Waco, Texas

We are working with Clif on possibly getting some Motorcycle Awareness Billboards put up around the state. We will be moving forward with this in conjunction with B.A.N.D..
I shall go home on Thursday 19th to take my wife out to dinner on our 45th anniversary. Haven't missed one yet and don't plan to start now. I'll go on to the Tyler Longriders Run from there on Friday and attend the East Texas COC meeting on Sunday. Will return to Irving to meet with Mike Moore, candidate for Rep. District 105. Will pick up the Sputnik Award to get it engraved and present it at the winners next chapter meeting. Will also pass the membership shirts to Butterfly to get up on the Products Site.

Hope to see some of you at the Advisor Meeting at the state office.

Poker Runs are gambling

Hey just got this info, we knew it would be coming, guess its finally arrived....

She's not bluffing: Games illegal
Potter County attorney warns against charity poker
By KAREN D. SMITHkaren.smith@amarillo.com The Amarillo Globe-News
Odds are some charitable folks have broken state gambling laws without realizing it.Whether sit-down affairs or traveling games on wheels, poker games are illegal unless they're held in a private place, the house takes no cut of the winnings and the chances of winning or losing are the same for all who play.
"If you pay to play and there's a chance to win a prize of value at any card game, that is gambling and that is against the law," Letson said. "And there is not an exception for charity."
The only way to run a legal charity poker game would be to charge to play but offer no prizes, or to offer prizes without charging an entry fee, "but that doesn't make you any money," Letson said.

Political Signs

At least there are some riders out there helping Biker Friendly candidates. These riders are putting out signs for Congressman Martin Frost. Congratulations to them for getting off their tail and getting the job done. Does anyone else put there have any such pictures to share?

Insurance Enclosure

I spoke to Sputnik on the phone and he said that I should send this to you to post on the website. I have had vehicle insurance with Dairyland for years and this is just one more reason that I will continue to insure with them. The two attachments here were a two-sided document that was enclosed with newest premium notice and there isn't even a motorcycle on the policy so it would seem that they sent it to every one of their policyholders. Kudos to them for going the extra mile!

OK - LET'S ROCK

OK Warriors it is time to get off your tails and prove your mettle. If you or anyone you know live in HOOD or SOMERVILLE county, Congressman Chet Edwards needs your help. They need people who can get 4'x8' campaign signs put out in these two counties. This is where you can really make a difference. Five Steps To Freedom the easy way folks. Get a pickup and a few buddies one weekend, pick up the signs and get to it. I have put out 27 of these in one day by myself. Three or four groups in each county can handle this chore easily. At least you have a very able bodied Advisor, Greg Bodovsky, to give you all the details and make arrangements for where you pick up the signs.
Contact Greg at 254-659-7458 - Greg let me know who contacts you. Congressman Edwards has always been there for Texas, especially Fort Hood when we need him. It is time to show our appreciation. We have the toughest congressional contest of this election in my home county.
We have no chapter and no District Advisor to fall back on so most of my time from now until the election is pretty much taken up. Please don't make me have to come up and help Greg do your job.
